To UGG or not to UGG?

The other day it was raining, I had some errands to run, and I found myself with a dilemma. I didn't feel like dressing, decided to stay in sweats, and was left with minimal shoe options.

When I "dress", it's either heels or slouchy flat boots, depending on the occasion. But when it comes to dressing down, what's a girl to do? I hate sneakers. I own ONE pair, and never wear them...IMO, they're an abomination.

Rummaging through my closet for a solution I came across two old pairs of Uggs, and I got to thinking about how badly I had wanted them. I got two pairs a few years ago-- one black, one sand. I couldn't justify the price, so I begged and begged for them as Christmas presents. I practically LIVED in the sand pair (the black ones still look new...in retrospect, not the best color choice.)

Fast forward to the present, and I wouldn't be caught dead in them. In fact, I threw them on with my STEWIE GRIFFIN pajama pants to run to Dunkin Donuts yesterday morning, and THEY were the part of my outfit I was most embarrassed about. LOL.

And then I realized that the Ugg brand is still alive and kicking, which means that some of you ARE wearing them. So... time to fess up:

To UGG or not to UGG?

If you're like me, and would sooner die than be seen in these boots, I ask you: What alternatives do we have? Granted, I probably shouldn't be running around in pajama pants (don't worry, I opted for drive-thru), or worrying about viable shoe options to match said pants...but I can't justify getting completely dressed just to run for coffee. Sneakers are not an option for me. Rain boots would just make me look crazy. Short of going barefoot, what's a good, lazy day alternative?

  3. In terms of sneakers, are we talking running shoes or like Keds or like... Nike Air Force Ones? I rather enjoy my canvas sneakers..

  4. I have never done UGGS. My parents bought me some similar style sheep skin booties when I was a child for padding around the house in the winter. The interior got sweaty and disgusting so, I've been turned off ever since. Would rather double up on socks.

Last Fall I bought these slouchy suede motorcycle boots after searching high and low and returning about 5 pairs of casual boots that just didn't suit. They have saved me on so many occasions. They pull on and are still on trend. 3 colors.

  5. for the occasional coffee run in sweatpants or leggings, I do just a plain ballet flat... easy to slip on and very inconspicious unlike sneakers that I too find to be an abomination (also they're way too time consuming to take on and off!)

  6. @fazed: No, I think keds types are ok.. I don't mind sneakers on others, I just don't wear them. I don't like the way they look.

@L.R.: thanks, I have a similar boot.. they look funny with my sweatpants, though.

@alicia: Oooh, ballet flats! Good idea!

  7. ahahah didn't know you were trying to coordinate with sweats! I admit, I love sneakers... get 'em laced just right and you can slip them on and off with little effort. I understand hating them though. I'm trying to make the switch from sweats to yoga pants and warm leggings for casual house wear this winter. Hoping to feel more polished. That may solve your dilemma.

  8. UGGS are the fashion downfall of the human race. They are equally as horrible as Crocs. Get some Aquatalia winter boots and stay warm while looking classy.

  9. Strangely, Ugg actually has some REALLY cute alternatives that AREN'T like the ones listed above. Which is sad, because if they promoted the other styles, they'd probably have a much better reputation.

I have a style that's built like a motorcycle boot--everyone always scoffs and goes, "Those are UGGS?!" in disbelief when I wear them... but they're great for Mid-Western winters, keep my feet dry & warm, and are SO much more stylish... I can wear them to work or with jeans.

  10. I concur with Ashe Mischief.

I have a pair of boots similar to Uggs in a deep fushia color...which probably sounds even worse, but I think they're pretty cute. I didn't wear them at all last year, but I think I'll break 'em out this winter with leggings and a chunky sweater.

For sure they have to be worn the right way in the right season or they look terrible.

  11. I wouldn't go out in public in sweatpants, either... (I don't even own any; a couple pairs of nice yoga pants, though). Personally for me it would be jeans at the very minimum, and maybe Converse, which aren't sneakers, exactly.

  12. they're my slippers. i've worn them out once with jeans and a fitted, vintage sweatshirt to get take-out in the snow, thats it!

  13. But you wear sweat pants to run errands? You're right in noticing your misplaced emmbarrassement.

I have Ugg-style boots (from Target) that I mainly wear camping and on really quick errands. I don't think it's embarrassing to be seen in Uggs. It just usually looks like you were too lazy to put together a better outfit. Or maybe it's just really cold out.
